Situation 4 -- "How can I lead a Bible study among my people group when they are all illiterate?"
7-Step Bible Study for Non-literate People
Note: Often it is good to review Bible Study application (point No. 6) from last time before starting a new study.
- Everyone invite God’s Spirit to speak and guide the Bible Study. This is deeper than just an opening prayer.
- Have one person read the whole passage out loud two times while everyone listens closely.
- Read the first verse, pause a couple seconds, and then read it again. Then go in a circle and have everyone share what they think is an important phrase in the verse (or the 2-5 most important words). No discussion! Repeat for each verse in the passage.
- Maintain silence for 2 minutes as you ask God’s Spirit to speak to you through these verses. Read point No. 5 before the silence.
- Everyone share in 2-3 sentences what God emphasized to them from the passage during the silence. No discussion or preaching.
*When a group is learning this method, skip point No. 6 for the first few times. You may also want to skip No. 6 if there is a shortage of time.
- Discuss and decide one specific point that God is saying to everyone to obey as a group.
- Pray and commit to encourage each other on this point. Remember to check up with each other next time you get together.
